Canterbury Archaeological Trust is delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of The Canterbury Historic Towns Atlas in association with the Historic Towns Trust, an ambitious new volume that brings together decades of archaeological research, historical investigation and cartographic expertise to tell the story of one of England's most remarkable cities. Produced by a specialist team including CAT’s Dr Jake Weekes with Prof. Jackie Eales, Clive Bowley, Luke Farrell and cartographer Giles Darkes, it represents a significant achievement.

For centuries, Canterbury has evolved from Roman town to medieval pilgrimage centre, from bustling market city to the vibrant historic city we know today. Beneath its streets lies layer upon layer of evidence revealing how generations have lived, worked, worshipped and shaped the city across two millennia. The Canterbury Historic Towns Atlas provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore that history.

Through a unique combination of maps, illustrations, photographs and expert commentary, readers will be able to trace Canterbury's development through time, discovering how its streets, buildings and communities have changed over the centuries. The Atlas presents the latest understanding of the city's past in an accessible and visually engaging format.

Whether you are a local resident, local historian, student, visitor or simply fascinated by Canterbury's rich heritage, the Atlas offers new perspectives on familiar places and reveals stories hidden beneath the modern city.

The Canterbury Atlas will be available from December 2026, priced at £30. Follow us for regular updates as we count down to publication.
