Canterbury Archaeological Trust was formed in 1976 and is now one of the UK’s leading commercial contractors. It has an enviable academic record and maintains close contacts with Kent’s two major universities and other academic institutions across the UK and abroad.

The Trust is seeking to recruit an experienced Finds Manager on permanent contract to manage our busy finds team, to prepare specialist reports and to assist with the management and development of our post-excavation and publication programme. The post would be full time although flexible or part time working would be considered for the right applicant.

The successful applicant will help us to establish a new store and branch office for the finds team. The new facility will eventually become a Resource Centre for Canterbury’s archaeology and material culture and a focus for outreach and volunteering in Kent.

The applicant should first and foremost have managerial experience in running a finds team or in occupying a senior role within a finds team. A primary responsibility will be to manage the logistics of finds processing, assessment and analysis, identifying and managing resources, and liaising with internal and external personnel to help ensure the effective throughput of archaeological projects in a timely fashion within budget and to a high professional and academic standard. The applicant should also have a specialism and demonstrable record in producing catalogues, grey paper reports and reports for publication. A specialism in Roman and/or medieval pottery would be preferred, although other specialisms would be considered. The Trust presently employs small finds and environmental specialists.

The successful candidate would work closely with the Post-Excavation Director, Archives Manager, Project Managers, Project Officers and external specialists to ensure that programmes for finds work are completed to a high standard within budgetary and programme targets. They should be able to demonstrate considerable experience in the production of finds reports up to publication level.

The post-holder will have management responsibility for a number of full and part-time staff, together with external specialists working under contract and volunteers assisting with finds processing. The Trust is extremely active within the communities of Kent and some involvement in outreach activities may be required.
