People in the past often used clay to make their pots and pans. Archaeologists sometimes find complete pots that people used, but usually they find broken pieces (sherds).
These fragments can still tell us about how those people lived and worked.

Look carefully at your sherd or pot

Is it a: complete pot / rim / profile (from rim to base) / base / body / handle
(Circle one)

What material is it made from?

What colour is it? Look at all surfaces.

Is there a pattern on it? Describe any you can see.

How does it feel (texture)?

How do you think it was made? Eg. on a potter's wheel, by hand, in a mould.

What type of pot is it from? Eg. dish, jug, jar etc.

What do you think it was used for?

What materials do we use now to make drinking, eating and cooking vessels?
