Work Experience with Canterbury Archaeological Trust

Placements are particularly valuable for those considering pursuing Archaeology or a related subject on leaving school, as opportunities for young people to gain first-hand experience in an archaeological environment are relatively limited.

The Local Education Authority Work Experience initiative gives equal emphasis to developing an individual's personal skills, such as self-discipline and interaction with others within an adult working environment.

A placement with C.A.T.

We currently have a quota of one-week placements for 15 to 17 year olds which operates on a first come, first served basis (maximum 12 placements per year).

The student is expected to make a written application, giving the name of the school, saying which subjects are being taken, age at time of placement and why s/he would like to come to C.A.T.

It is advisable to apply at least one term in advance but not more than one year.
Any student attending a secondary school in Kent (maintained or independent) may apply. Students regularly come from schools outside the Canterbury district.
Only one placement is possible, per student
When excavation work is available, a student must be at least 16 years of age to go on site.

What do students do?

We try to plan a range of activities for the week and the proposed programme is sent to the student the week prior to placement. The Education Officer introduces him/her to the Trust and the nature of its work. This is followed by visits to Canterbury Museums and sessions with other C.A.T. staff. Hands-on experience usually includes cleaning 'bulk' finds (pot sherds, animal bone, building materials etc.), sorting soil samples for environmental evidence (small fragments of animal and plant remains) and IT tasks.

Voluntary work

Outside the work experience programme, you may be able to join us as a volunteer. Volunteers usually help in the 'bulk finds' cleaning room and make arrangements independently with the Finds Supervisor, Jacqui Lawrence, on 07759 189453 or 01227 462062.
