| Archaeology in Education Service. Managed by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust Ltd. | |||||||||||||||||||
Work Experience with Canterbury Archaeological Trust(Please note: We are suspending this programme in 2009. However, you may contact the Education Officer if you are interested in coming to an ‘Introduction to Archaeology’ day held at CAT HQ in school holidays.) Placements are particularly valuable for those considering pursuing Archaeology or a related subject on leaving school, as opportunities for young people to gain first-hand experience in an archaeological environment are relatively limited. The Local Education Authority Work Experience initiative gives equal emphasis to developing an individual's personal skills, such as self-discipline and interaction with others within an adult working environment. A placement with C.A.T.
What do students do?We try to plan a range of activities for the week and the proposed programme is sent to the student the week prior to placement. The Education Officer introduces him/her to the Trust and the nature of its work. This is followed by visits to Canterbury Museums and sessions with other C.A.T. staff. Hands-on experience usually includes cleaning 'bulk' finds (pot sherds, animal bone, building materials etc.), sorting soil samples for environmental evidence (small fragments of animal and plant remains) and IT tasks. Voluntary workOutside the work experience programme, you may be able to join us as a volunteer. Volunteers usually help in the 'bulk finds' cleaning room and make arrangements independently with the Finds Supervisor, Jacqui Lawrence, on 07759 189453 or 01227 462062.
