Illuminating the past – Enhancing the present – Inspiring the future

Let them Speak for Themselves

‘Let them Speak for Themselves’ is one element of the Up on the Downs project hosted by Dover District Council. As part of the White Cliffs Landscape Partnership Scheme, ‘Up on the Downs’ focuses on environmental conservation, but there are heritage elements involving monuments that have fallen into neglect.

‘Let them Speak for Themselves’ focuses on the twentieth-century military and civil defense structures on the Downs around Dover and Folkestone. A large number of these are documented, but many are incorrectly recorded. Volunteers are working on accurately locating as a many as possible, identifying any that have not been previously recorded and assessing the current condition of these important remains.

Work began in April 2013 and continues. The next stage of the project will be to carry out remedial works, based on the results of the survey.
